Painful and heavy periods, as well as irregular bleeding and pre menstrual syndrome (PMS) are among the most common complaints for which I see women for homeopathic treatment.  Each woman’s experience is different, but most find that homeopathy provides relief  reducing pain and emotional extremes, and restoring their natural cycle.  Here is a brief explanation as to why women get period pain and also some advice on foods, pain relief and homeopathic remedies that may help you. 

Period pain is very common and effects a lot of women each month. It will feel like an ache in the lower part of your abdomen. It can be sharp or dull and can go to the tops of your legs and lower back. The tissue in the womb release chemicals that trigger pain. It also triggers other chemicals called prostaglandins. These chemicals will make the womb muscles contract more and cause more pain.

The pain may last between 1 and 3 days although this will vary from women to women, and some may last longer. The pain should get less as time goes by. Every woman is different, and some may experience no pain or very mild pain while others will experience sever pain that can affect their daily life.

How to reduce period pain naturally

There are things that you can do to help reduce the pain without pain killers such as paracetamol and ibuprofen. 

  1. Try a hot water bottle or heat pad to ease the pain.
  2. Take some magnesium. Magnesium helps with muscle cramps, so either eat more foods containing magnesium or take a supplement. Magnesium foods are green leafy vegetables, peanuts, baked beans, lentils, wholegrains, almonds, and cashew nuts.
  3. Take some gentle exercise such as walking as this will help ease the pain or yoga.
  4. Cut back o sugary foods, fizzy drinks and caffeine. 
  5. make sure you are getting enough calcium in your diet. 

Homeopathic help for menstrual cramp

Mag phos is a good remedy for period pain. If heat relieves the pain and also firm pressure, then this is a great remedy to try.

Colocynthis this remedy is good if there is intense cramping pain which is better by bending double (or drawing knees up to chest), or by very firm pressure. The pressure of lying flat on the abdomen also provides some relief.  The pain is sudden and violent and may cause screaming or vomiting from the intensity of it.  

Chamomilla this is the remedy if your period pain is extremely intense and distressing, with great irritability. In addition, Chamomilla is one of the main remedies for vomiting, diarrhoea and fainting during the period.  The pain may extend down the thighs.  One of the main indications for this remedy in menstrual problems is the excessive pain with irritability the intensity of it makes you bad tempered and snappish.
